If you are interested in getting into the internet business in some way,
shape or form, you are going to need a domain name at some point. A domain
name is simply a name that a website uses to identify itself. The name
corresponds to a specific IP, but since people are better at remembering
names than numbers for the most part, domain names facilitate easier finding
of different websites.
The first thing you need to do when finding your perfect domain name is to
decide which top level domain you want. Top level domains (TLDs for short)
are the extensions that you see at the end of the actual domain name; in
other words, the suffixes like .com, .net, .org, .ca and others are all top
level domains. When domain names were first around, these TLD markings
were basically intended to give you a very general idea of where the company
was coming from; .edu was therefore an educational institution (and more
likely an American educational institution), .com was a commercial website,
.ca was a website that wanted to identify itself as Canadian and so forth.
With the proliferation of domain names, these lines have become blurred to a
certain extent which makes it easier for you to choose one to portray the
interests of your website in a very positive light. If you want your
website to be thought of as educational, you can even go for the .edu TLD
even if you don’t run a school, as long as you are willing to pay more money
than you could for a .com.
Once you have the TLD, it is time to decide on the actual domain name. You
want to pick something that is related to your company, but at the same time
one that is easy to remember. This can sometimes be difficult, but the
good news is that you can always go outside the .com TLD if you can’t find
one of a suitable nature..
